Tracing the Light: Imagery Before Photography

Well, Mark Osterman is one of my photographic living heroes. He’s teaching a class called Tracing the Light: Imagery Before Photography at the George Eastman House in June, about camera obscuras, the camera before photography, and camera lucidas.

I’ve always wanted to go to the George Eastman House. If you’re in the area, check out their Roger Ballen show: Roger Ballen Photographs 1982-2009. Bizarre, great b&w photos. Very odd.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Minnesota, and you want to experience a camera obscura yourself, drive to the Franconia Sculpture Park, find the gypsy wagon Porta Obscura by Holly Streekstra, go into the parlor, stand against the wall and push the electric button, and behold! I love this piece and this sculpture park.
